In principle, strong grinding disks are used for rough material removal, for example with metal, but mostly fiber discs or serrated lock washers are used for medium and fine machining.
When grinding surface unevenness, cleaning bricks, eliminating elevated seams or busting edges, angle grinders are often used with grinding disks. Burning burrs (laser burrs, water jet cutting burrs, punching burrs or scissor burrs) after cutting metal could be processed with such a strong abrasive. For high and extreme burrs, bonded grinding wheels, e.g. the Green Corps grinding disks using high cutting performance with lower vibrations or Cubitron ™ II flap discs in 3M have shown their value. An angle grinder with a grinding wheel is guided to the surface at an angle of 30 to 35 °.
Serrated lock washers for angle grinders contain lamellas that overlap in a fan shape and are fitted using abrasive grains, which (sometimes cranked or conical) are mounted on a carrier, e.g. manufactured from plastic, aluminum or fiberglass composite, are glued. In contrast to grinding disks, they have lower vibrations and fewer effects occur between the abrasive and the workpiece. It's preferably used on angle grinders for machining weld seams, for edge and surface grinding, such as sanding off paint and rust, plastering cast iron, smoothing rough wooden surfaces or for polishing. Moderate burrs can be eliminated using a 3M Cubitron ™ II valve disc.
Benefits of serrated lock washers:
Soft grinding for a more even surface
Cool cut.
In addition, serrated lock washers with zirconium corundum hardly clog when grinding aluminum or stainless steel.
Coarse cleaning disks are used, among other items for removing paint, rust, scale and tarnish. Here is the only way to afterwards apply technically faultless welded connections, paintwork or coatings to the material. Coarse cleaning disks, such as the ones from the Scotch-Brite ™ program, are readily able to split up a ceramic layer as a result of the abrasive grain (e.g. silicon carbide) integrated in the springy fleece, while the abrasive particles have been eliminated by the rotating disk at precisely the exact same time. Another advantage: the abrasive doesn't penetrate into the base material and change its geometry - that effectively prevents undermining.
Fiber disks are suitable e.g. ideal for chamfering with the angle grinder, such as in preparation for a weld seam (X or V joint). Here, the development of the 3M Cubitron ™ II fiber discs to get clean, fast, metallically glowing bevelling in industrial practice leads to a departure from the principle: thermal processing takes precedence over mechanical processing. But timber can also be processed less or more roughly with a fiber grinding disc.
